Summary: Removing all sensors and equipment, only solar panels, one TC set, scaffolding and some structural parts left.

West Pond
2024-05-01

Daphne and I arrived at about 10:00 PDT. It was warm and very windy but at the site in the shade of the wind blocking willows it was almost pleasant. This was the first major effort at decommissioning the site. We have been half-heartedly pulling sensors since the beginning of the year. The power has been pretty much out for a while now.

I started removing the batteries and boxes from the solar scaffolding. There were five batteries, four in the current battery bank sn BB-WP. All were pretty much dead except one that might recover. The charge controller sn 114000077 was full of ants. I got it a little wet when the box it was in started to take on water. I took it apart and tried to clean it up but it’s still a mess and questionably functional. All that is left are the two solar panels and one of the Y-connectors. The boardwalk is nearly rotted through where the boxes were sitting. We managed to pull all of the power line to the tower including the section in conduit under the road. It’s in two pieces where a mower cut it and then later the tree ate it on the west side of the levee.

Daphne removed most of the remaining equipment from the tower only dropping and losing one Allen wrench and one SS bolt.

One set of thermocouples (southwest) came out without the wooden stick which probably rotted. Another set (northwest) seem to be stuck under something (possibly collapsed boardwalk) so we cut it off. The third set (northeast) is stuck, possibly tied to the submerged scaffolding. We will try to pull it when the pull the scaffolding.

We also found and removed three old sippers that Ari probably installed.

We removed the old Canon camera enclosure and the Picam sn RPI0W-006 to use at East End.

We removed the old well pipe and a post that was used for under canopy PAR.

We tried to throw ants out of everything as best we could then packed it all in the truck to bring home.

We left for East End at about 12:30 PDT
