Had a nice surprise visit from Kaiyu Guan from Illinois. We talked a lot about upscaling carbon and water fluxes of ag ecosystems and big questions of science, life and careers. So nice to see peers and friends and chat science. You dont realize how much we lost during the years of covid.

Qing Zhu from LBL gave a Biometlab presentation on his machine learning and mechanistic methane flux modeling.  It was a nice opportunity to learn from each other and the progress he is making with more sophisticated machine learning models.

Prof. Ben Runkle, University of Arkansas, gave the Biomet Lab meeting seminar on his work on rice carbon, methane and water flux measurements and analysis.  Fascinating story and great data

Research

The Delta team, led by Ariane Arias Ortiz conducted intensive soil C sampling campaign at Hill Slough. This will give us baseline data for the levee breach and wetland restoration

Forming a collaboration with Dr. Karine Adeline, from ONERA in France and colleagues from Spain using Tonzi data to test upscaling of Water Deficit Indices and its ability to down regulate evaporation.  The data to be obtained from space or aircraft include surface temperature and hyperspectral remote sensing.

We set up an advection experiment on Bouldin Alfalfa, to help us understand spatial patterns of water and energy fluxes for our AmeriFlux and Ecostress funding.  This project will be led by Carlos Wang for his PhD and NASA fellowship
