Proposals
The FLUXNET Proposal to NSF was successful and will be supported. A proposal was submitted to the National Science Foundation call for Research Coordinated Networks and is entitled 'FLUXNET : A Global Network Measuring and Assessing Spatial-Temporal Variability of Carbon Dioxide, Water Vapor and Energy Fluxes between the Terrestrial Biosphere and Atmosphere' It is a collaboration with our FLUXNET colleagues Bev Law, Riccardo Valentini, Hank Margolis, Yoshikazu, Ohtani, Niall Hanan, Gui-Rui Yu, Alex Knohl, Bob Cook and Ray Leuning.

Gretchen Miller, Siyan Ma and Dennis Baldocchi attended the annual AmeriFlux meeting in Boulder (Oct 16-18). Gretchen gave an invited presentation on the Berkeley Water Center-Microsoft Data Cube system that is being used to analyze mass quantities of AmeriFlux data. Siyan gave a poster on interannual variability of carbon fluxes over the savanna and grassland and posted Jorge's poster on soil carbon turnover.

Staff News
James Dorsey completed his tenure here in the Biometeorology Lab and is returning to the University of Mancester in the UK to work in Martin Gallagher's lab on atmospheric physics. James has worked on developing a 3-d footprint model that considers canopy turbulence and he put together the new methane flux system.

Dario Papale, from Universita' di Tuscia, and Markus Reichstein, from Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, Jena, visited the Biomet lab to continuing planning for the upcoming Fluxnet data synthesis workshop (Feb 19-22, 2007, Sesto, Italy) and prepare a new generation of gap filled datasets to use in the synthesis.

DDB attended theh Indo-US Workshop on IndoFlux, Chennai, India, July 12-16, 2006 and gave a presentation on 'Lessons learned from a global network of flux measurements sites-FLUXNET' .
DDB gave 4 hours of lectures on ' interpreting CO2 flux measurements and on Modeling CO2 exchange between vegetation and the atmosphere' at CarboEurope Summer School, Eddy Covariance Flux Measurements , Wepion, Belgium, July 18, 2006. About 40 students from Europe were in attendance.

Ted Hehn has constructed and installed the new radiation tram system at the Tonzi Ranch. The system moves back and forth along a 30 m path. It ports itself at night and its batteries recharge.

University of Toronto , Centre for Global Change Science, Distinguished Lecturer Seminar Series. March 21, 2006. Alex Knohl gave seminar for the Max Planck Society. ProposalsTwo proposals were submitted for pier review. One to DOE Terrestrial Carbon Project on Interannual variability of carbon, water and energy exchange of an oak savanna. It is in collaboration with Prof. John Battles. The second proposal went to NSF Carbon and Water. It is a collaborative effort with Prof. Whendee Silver and Maggie Kelly. The project is on measuring and modeling methane fluxes over a peatland. We propose to do the work on Sherman Island in the Delta and measure methane fluxes with the Los Gatos tunable diode spectrometer.

discrimination in a dense forest with a multi-layer biophysical model' .ddb also attended the science steering committee meeting, prior to the workshop, and reported on Fluxnet, which is an ILEAPS project.

Matthias Falk ended his tenure at Berkeley Jan 31, with the cessation of funding for the FLUXNET project. He is moving on to Davis and Susan Ustin's lab
