We had our annual Biomet Lab Lunch in SF. Attendance was near a peak including current (Sara Knox, Sebastian Wolf, Siyan Ma, Patty Oikawa, Cove Sturtevant, Sam Pennypacker) and alumni (Hideki Kobayashi, Nancy Kiang, Youngryel Ryu, Mathias Falk, Jessica Osuna, Matteo Detto, Xingyuan Chen, Josh Fisher, Liukang Xu, Lianhong Gu, Martin Beland) and long term lab visitors (Joon Kim, Jordi Vila, Markus Reichstein, Dario Papale).

Sebastian Wolf is ending his 3 year tenure in the Biomet lab as a ETH and Madame Curie Postdoctoral Fellow. He is returning back to Switzerland to finish his postdoc.

We had visitors before the AGU meeting from Argentina. Sylvain Kuppel and Javier Houspanoussian. They spoke on Biophysical effects of deforestation, floods, and farming management shifts on climate: Insights from the plains of Southern South America".

Staff News

The wetland research made the front of the ESPM web page. Check it out as Cove Sturtevant put together an exciting movie of the growing tules as the restored wetland developes.  We hope Cove can submit his Movie to the Sundance Festival and it wins an Academy Award next year.

Sara Knox is attending the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Sacramento and is presenting a talk on 'Greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration potential in restored freshwater marshes in the Sacramento San-Joaquin Delta, California'

ddb attended the AsiaFlux meeting at the International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Philippines. He gave presentations on greenhouse gas flux measurements in the delta and a report on the status of FLUXNET

Proposals

Funding arrived for the DOE project 'Connecting AmeriFlux to the Globe, Extending the Partnership with the Global Flux Network, FLUXNET'. The project is a partnership with Margaret Torn, Deb Agarwal, Marty Humphrey and a formal collaboration with Dario Papale and Markus Reichstein, ICOS, OzFlux, AmeriFlux, AsiaFlux, ChinaFlux and LBA.

Knox et al Agricultural peatland restoration: effects of land-use change on greenhouse gas (CO2 and CH4) fluxes in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta has been accepted with minor revision by Global Change Biology.

Eric Waller is now Dr. Waller, Ph.D.  Eric submitted his dissertation onComplexity of Climate Controls on Plant Species Distributions. Congratulations.

Meetings

Sebastian Wolf attended the GEWEX meeting in the Netherlands and presented a poster on Global Patterns of Biosphere-Atmosphere Energy Fluxes in Terrestrial Ecosystems.  He won an award at the meeting for his poster. Congratulations

ddb returned from a visit at the Czech Globe, the global change research centre of the Czech Academy of Science.  He gave presentations on FLUXNET and leaf to canopy scaling, discussed science with the team and visited various field sites across the Czech republic including Bily Kriz, a new temperate forest site in a flood plain and the new 250 m ICOS tower.

ddb gave the 2014 Karlsruhe Institute of Technology Environment lecture in Garmisch Partenkirchen on 'I've looked at plants from both sides now; ecosystem-atmosphere interactions'.  The next day he  participated in a Spitzenforscherwerkstatt (Environmental Research Summit) discussing science careers with 30 young scientists.

Patty Oikawa and ddb attended the 9th Air Pollution and Global Change Symposium at Asilomar.  Patty presented a poster on Improving process based modeling of CO2 and CH4 from managed peatland systems. ddb gave a presentation on Assessing the impacts of agricultural management and ecological restoration on greenhouse gas fluxes to and from temperate peatlands.

The Biomet Lab had its annual summer party at the Beach (a subset of hardy beach walkers + a guy from Stanford).

We also said Farewell to Martin Beland, who is moving on to a faculty position at Laval University in Quebec City.

Meetings

Sara Knox, Sebastian Wolf and ddb attended the DOE AmeriFlux and Terrestrial Ecosystem Science meetings at Potomac, MD. Sara won a travel scholarship to attend the meeting and Sebastian gave a talk on his drought synthesis work.

Numerous Biomet alumni were in attendance at the meetings, including Lianhong Gu, Liukang Xu, Jianwu Tang, Josh Fisher, Xingyuan Chen, Jessica Cruz and Emily Gilson.

Sebastian Wolf and ddb attended the 31st Conference on Agricultural and Forest Meteorology in Portland, OR.  Sebastian gave a talk on this drought synthesis.

Visitors

Michael Schaepman from the University of Zurich visited and gave an interesting seminar on 3D reconstruction and validation of forests systems. Prof. Schaepman and his team are using LIDAR to build virtual forests from the shoot to landscape scales.

Alan Robock, from Rutgers, visited before his BASC seminar on Climate and Regional Nuclear war. We discussed roles of volcanos on diffuse light, carbon cycle and climate, geoengineering and soil moisture networks. We had the treat of having lunch with Alan, and with Daniel Ellsberg of the Pentagon Papers fame.

Liukang Xu, former postdoc and now research scientist at LICOR, visited with his colleague Jason. We discussed instrumentation and flux measurements

Meetings

Sturtevant, Ma, Verfaillie and Baldocchi attended the AmeriFlux Data Manager's Workshop at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. It was a great opportunity to meet other collaborators across the network and to update our site metadata and stand information

Martin Beland and Dennis Baldocchi attended the International Conference on Global Vegetation Monitoring and Modeling in Avignon. Martin presented a poster on Foliage clumping and the role of Terrestrial LIDAR in its characterization.

DDB chaired the session on Site Measurements, Scaling, modelign and remote sensing.

Laurie Koteen has moved on to being Ecological Science Academic Coordinator at the UC Agricultural and Natural Resources unit. She will be involved with managing a network of flux towers being installed at a suite of the agricultural experiment stations across the state.
