2012-11-15 Laurie and I arrived about 12:30 PST, later than usual since we had forgotten keys to the gate since Sara wasn’t with us this time. We were hoping that the gate would be open by the time we finished the other sites but alas, it was not. Therefore, we had a little fun testing out the off-road capabilities of our rental sedan. Pretty good! Safely inside the gate and really hoping it would be open by the time we were due to leave, we went out to the tower. It was cloudy with a very mild breeze, about 16°C. The site remains cow trampled and pretty bare with a very short and sparse grass layer. We had a cow audience today and tried to pet a couple but they were too skittish. Walt was ferrying rock with the backhoe from the field to the south to somewhere to the west in our field. Laurie did soil respiration, well depth, moisture point, and spectral. I checked the tower, cleaned the instruments, and did some other maintenance items listed below. LGR readings: 11:29, 24.1 °C, 121.9 Torr (adjusted to 146.9 Torr), 13.83 us, 10 Hz, 2.6 ppm 7500 readings: CO2: 17.9 mmol m-3 H2O: 457 mmol m-3 P: 101.6 kPa diag: 248 (247 after cleaning spider webs out of the path) MET and SoilCO2 data streams looked good. I reinstalled SHF #1 into the multiplexor, burying the sensor at 2 cm depth maybe 4 meters to the west of the tower as far as the cable would allow. Readings looked to be settling nicely after install. Joe also had me install a new relay for the soil CO2 system, with a new program (CR10X_SOILCO2_EXPV8.CSI) to turn on the power at 9 minutes into every half hour, log readings from 14-16 minutes, and turn off power at 17 minutes. The relay install and program switch went fine, but the system was not working. Around this time, Joe stopped by on his way back from Tonzi and took over while we gratefully used his keys to head over to Mayberry. Joe may have more to add here, but there was no success to be had in the soil CO2 system. Joe mentioned he might return on Monday to take another crack at it. Joe: The same problem we've had in the past with the 10x restarting when the relay was activated. I couldn't even return the system to the previous configuration. So power is now on 24/7 until next visit. I'll try upgrading the 24V power system. |
