Summary: Regular data collection/cleaning, visitors from UCSC, hazy skies, trimmed willows, trimmed tules in front of solar panels, dropped camera SD card--no photos until next site visit, swapped miniDOT batteries

West Pond

Joe, Ariane, and I arrived at 11:20 PDT. Visiting us for the day were Susan and Gracie, 2 of Adina’s students who will be working with the future eddy covariance towers at Elkhorn Slough. It was warm, humid, calm, and overcast from a combination of clouds and haze from wildfire smoke.

On our way to the tower, we stopped to cut back the willows growing into the road. We disturbed a group of goats that we herded east towards East Pond.

The inlet was off and the water level has been going down. The staff gauge read 16cm.

Joe trimmed the tules in from of the solar panels and washed the panels.

Ari, Susan, and Gracie cleaned flux and rad sensors. I topped off the wash reservoir.

I downloaded met, camera, USB GHG, and miniDOT data. The miniDOT was in air, and there wasn’t much water at the surface, only soft soil. I swapped in fresh desiccant for the miniDOT and water level sensors and put in new lithium batteries for the miniDOT.

We dropped the empty camera card into the tules so we don’t have any photos right now at WP. Ari spent a while excavating the layers of tule thatch, but we would have to get rather lucky to find something as small as the card. We had a spare microSD card and Joe tried to Remote Desktop into his PC to download the Canon scripts, but the code wasn’t quite all ready to go. I had 2 picams in the car that we had removed from BC, but they both had wide lenses and we were concerned about camera color differences between the Canon and the picam. Joe removed the Canon camera to bring back to the lab to set up on a new card.

There were a couple ants in the datalogger box so I left a prophylactic mothball in the box.
