Summary: Regular data collection/cleaning, Ariane's water samples, water samples for Isabel, measured water level
2020-01-30 Mayberry Ariane and I arrived at 9:20 PST. Joe, Dennis, Alex, and Robert went to East Pond to dismantle the tower to move to a new temporary tower on Sherman Wetland. It was a cool and mostly overcast morning with a small breeze. The water level was 31 cm, a little higher than before. Ariane got started collecting water samples. Ariane- I took surface water samples at the tower, inlet, outlet and at the big channel northwest of the tower. The water level at vegetated areas was low or was below ground. I could only find standing water at the 0.5 footprint. Additionally, I collected porewaters at two vegetated sites: site at the 0.5 footprint vegetated by cattails, and at a site located at the 0.7 footprint vegetated by phragmites. Conductivity, pH and salinity were recorded in situ for each sample. Average salinity of surface waters was 3 ppt, with lowest values near the inlet (1.2) and highest at the outlet (4.4). Average salinity of porewaters was 6 ppt. pH was higher in surface (7.6) than in porewaters (6). Readings at the Tower: Conductivity: 5.67 mS Salinity: 3.1 ppt pH: 8.1 Samples for dissolved CH4 were stored in previously degassed wheaton bottles. Other analysis will include: DOC, DIC, anions and nutrients. Daphne- I downloaded met, camera, and USB GHG data. The LWin looked ok (had gaps last time). I collected water samples for Isabel at 9:30 PST. The fluorometer lenses looked clean, although the brushes are quite dirty. I cleaned the flux and rad sensors. The wash reservoir was 2/3 full; I refilled it. The conductivity sensor was buried in the soft sediment, I pulled it out and shortened its cable so it's floating in the water. The sensor hole needs to be cleaned. I took some measurements of the water level sensor and the well. Top of pipe to probe = 90 cm Top of pipe to water level = 68 cm Top of pipe to sediment = 89 cm Sensor reading = 0.298 psi So, probe should be measuring 22 cm of water. The probe felt like it was at the bottom of the well, but it was not tied in place, so I added a small ziptie to attach the cable to a small hole at the top of the well. Ariane measured water level in the channel in front of the tower. Water level to soft sediment = 65 cm Water level to "more resistant" sediment = 70 cm LI-7500 readings: CO2 461ppm H2O 772ppm T 11.1C P 102.3kPa SS 103--> 104 after cleaning LI7700 readings: CH4 3.3ppm RSSI 48-->84 after cleaning I left at 10:10 to join the others at East Pond. I came back around 15:30 to pick up Ariane and collect more water samples at 3 more sites around the wetland before we went to the new Sherman Wetland temporary tower. |
