Summary: Lost power a couple of times - hopefully fixed by tightening loose connections at solar controller, power loss killed pi-cam, cause 7700 to lose its wash settings, scrapped barnacles, got diffuse PAR running, AirT still drifting

Daphne, Robert, Vona and I arrived at about 13:50. It was mild and partly overcast – a nice fall day. We met Juan Mercado on the way in. He was out checking on things. They are improving the fence along Hwy 160 because people are cutting the barbed wire to get on to the property. The wetland near the Sherman Barn site is nearly complete but construction has to stop now for the winter during the garter snake hibernation period. The cattails are heavily chewed by the caterpillars and turning brown. The tules still look good mostly. Water level was 39cm a little higher than last time.

Daphne collected flux and met.
The 7500 read: 413ppm CO2, 500mmol/m3 H2O, 20.9C, 101.9kPa, 101SS
The 7700 read: 1.99ppm CH4, 84RSSI after cleaning.
The wash box was full of wasps. We chased them away and refilled the reservoir that was nearly empty. We left the box lid open.

Power had gone out a couple of times but seemed to come back on well before the batteries had completely recharged. I think this indicates a loose connection. I tightened the load line screws at the charge controller 1/2 -3/4 turn. I hope that fixes it. There were a bunch of ants in the solar controller box – I left them some mothballs.

The intermittent power seems to have killed the pi-cam sn RPI0W-003. We brought it back to the lab for inspection. Hopefully just messed up the files on the memory card, but we brought it in to be fixed. The Canon camera also got stopped by the power outage.

The 7700 was also acting funny – it was spinning its mirror for about 10sec every 30min probably due the power outages. The settings seemed okay. We tried to reapply them and rebooted the 7700 but it was still spinning every 30min. There is new firmware that we can try uploading next time. Otherwise the data seemed okay.

We tested the tipping bucket sn 40415-1006. We got 53/50 tips and adjusted its screws 1/2 turn out (CCW).

The water sensor boom was dropped from the upright position back into the water. The collar on the FD chamber came off and we discovered the inside of the collar was covered in barnacles. We scraped the barnacles off and put the collar back on. We also scrapped barnacles off the Eos CO2 probe, cleaned it as best we could and added a copper screen to it.

The diffuse PAR we put up last week but couldn’t get to work seems to have been just a missed wire connection. The white SDI-12 wire was not connected to a control port at the CR1000. Last time we were kind of in a rush and maybe just didn’t wait long enough for the shadow band to trigger the proximity sensor and provide a reading. Then in our troubleshooting maybe we left the control wire loose. Seems to be working now.

The HMP45 AirT is still drifting. We can swap it with a new HMP155 from the advection experiment next time.

We left at about 15:00 PDT
