Others: Dennis, Sara

Summary: Regular field work. Took soil cores. Check theta probe and SoilT_6 time series. Put ant baits in box. All else well.

We arrived about 9:30 PST. It was cold (4 °C) but sunny with a very mild breeze. The water under the bridge near the site was well flooded, but the water in the ditch next to the field was relatively low. The field looks pretty much the same, moist and cow trampled with a very short green grass layer and patchy bare ground. Our cow friends were present again today.

I checked the tower, downloaded data, and cleaned the instruments while Dennis and Sara took two soil cores, moisture point, well depth, soil respiration and spectral measurements. Sara asked me to put a note in to remind her to check the theta probe time series, as something looked a little funky to her. I also noted that SoilT_6 is reading –INF in the soilCO2 flux data stream, otherwise the MET looked good. We need to make sure we are excluding North winds from the site, as the EPA trailer creates a giant obstruction in this direction. I put two Terro liquid ant bait stations in the box, because the ants really love the warm power adapters and pump power junction box.

When I tried to switch from the LGR screen to the Loggernet screen, I noticed that the Loggernet computer was off. Pressing the power button did nothing. Ants were crawling (swarming really) all over the power adapter, but the adapter is sealed so there was no real problem there. I took the adapter out, shook everybody off, then reinstalled it and the computer started right up. Go figure. It looks like somehow I may have caused this power failure anyway when I opened the box because all the previous days’ MET and SoilCO2 data were parsed out in the files, so I’m not sure what happened there. All is well though.

LGR readings: 08:29, 17.04 °C, 83.1 Torr (adjusted to 149.0 Torr), 13.856 us, 10 Hz, 2.695 ppm

7500 readings:
CO2: 20.4 mmol m-3 (bumped to 20.2 after cleaning)
H2O: 280 mmol m-3 (bumped to 364 after cleaning)
diag: 248 (247 after cleaning)
p = 102.7 kPa
