Summary: Regular data collection/cleaning, tide incoming, lots of cattail fluff

2023-02-01
Gilbert Tract

Robert and I arrived to the main tower at 10:05 PST. It was cold and mostly sunny with some high thin clouds. There was plenty of cattail fluff floating by on the breeze, and the open water was covered with azolla and cattail fluff. The surface water looked very still but the ground by the tower was getting increasingly soggy, so water level was rising. The staff gauge read 86cm at 10:14 PST.

I downloaded met, camera, and USB GHG data. I changed the eddy clock +50sec from 10:15 to 10:15:50 and restarted logging. I downloaded the miniDOT data and swapped its desiccant. Robert cleaned the flux and rad sensors. The wash reservoir was more than 90% full, so we did not top off the reservoir.

I meant to check the conductivity sensor as part of it routine check every 3 months, but it’s tied down to a post. I can check it next time we are there to make boardwalk improvements.

There was some azolla stuck on the cables about 10cm below the sensor extension box, which means the water level came up that close to the box. Good thing Joe secured the box at a higher height.

I also meant to add a bird spike to the 7550, but forgot. This site used to have an AMP loaner 7500 without a bird spike mount, and I forgot to bring a bird spike when we swapped it for one of our own 7500s during out last site visit.

The 7500 read: 453ppm CO2, 321mmol/m3 H2O, 8.6C, 102.4kPa, 102SS --> forgot to write after cleaning
The 7700 read: 2.4ppm CH4, 62RSSI –> 80+ after cleaning.

We arrived at Flo around 10:30 PST. I downloaded data, reset the clock, and restarted logging. In the last two weeks of depth data, there were many drops in the first week and almost no drops in the second week. I wonder what changed. Did a surge of water clear out all of the weeds? Did an herbivore eat everything?

The water was high and turbid, so we didn’t try to clean any underwater veg with the telescoping rake.

We left at 10:40 PST.
