Summary: Ants in data logger box, CR1000 not running mostly restored, remove computer system, lots or spider webs and cattail fluff in eddy sensors.
East End 2016-11-08 I arrived about 11am. Elke, Dennis and Kyle dropped me off while they went to TA to collect soils with Whendee’s lab and do the standard field work. It was hazy and warm with very little breeze. The water level was quite a bit higher near the top of the well pipe. The data logger box was full of millions of ants. They were little tiny black ants. They didn’t bite but they didn’t seem to be going anywhere either. I ended up wiping them up with a rag and shaking it out many, many times to get the populating down to a manageable amount. I tried to seal the putty around the cables better and put some mothballs in the box before closing it up. The system stopped sending met data five days before. The computer system was still working, but it looked like the CR1000 was not running. The CR1000 would start up but when it started making measurements it would quit. I disconnected the multiplexors think one of them was shorted by the ants but this didn’t change the situation. Finally I disconnected everything from the CR1000 planning on removing it but then it started working. I started adding back sensors and got most things working. Still not connected are the DO which was giving bad readings, the water CO2 probe that might be the problem and the conductivity sensor. I removed the computer system so no images will be recorded until it is replaced. There were lots of spider webs with cattail fluff on the eddy sensors. The 7700 auto wash cycle ran soon after I arrived and seemed to work but did not improve the RSSI. The 7500 read: 435.6ppm CO2, 795.3mmol/m3 H2O, 21.8C, 102.4kPa, 98.88SS – 100.4 after cleaning The 7700 read: 0.07ppm CH4, 9.8RSSI – 88.6RSSI and 2.04ppm CH4 after cleaning The wash reservoir was almost empty – refilled. The radiometer looked dirty and were cleaned by Kyle. |
