Summary: Regular data collection/cleaning, porewater salinity samples
2023-06-29 Mayberry Alex K. and I arrived at 11:00 PDT. It was sunny and starting to warm up, although the breeze kept it relatively mild. The staff gauge read 45cm. The wetland is looking very green overall. I downloaded met, cam, and USB GHG. Alex cleaned flux and rad sensors. We lowered the eddy post to reach the flux sensors more easily. When we were raising it again, we were confused about which height to raise it back to. There is both a hole for the bolt on the lower clamp, and some sharpie lines. Putting the bolt into the hole did not line up with the sharpie lines. I decided the hole was more recent since it had both height and orientation information. I drew new sharpie lines to match up with the bolt hole. The 7500 read: 424ppm CO2, 740 mmol/m3 H2O, 22.6C, 100.6kPa, 100SS --102 after cleaning The 7700 read: 1.99ppm CH4, 46RSSI –72 after cleaning Alex and I worked on taking porewater salinity samples for Kyle. The 3-way valve was getting plugged a lot, so we decided just to attach the syringe directly to the soft tubing. To maintain suction when removing the syringe, Alex pinched the soft tubing closed with his fingers before removing the syringe. Since we were experimenting with the methodology, we measured several depths multiple times to check if our methodology made a big difference. The sample temperature seemed to be influenced by how long it took to take the sample (the sample would spend longer in the tubing and have more time to heat up in the sun), so the earlier samples were warmer because it took longer for us to pull enough sample through the tubing + valve. Data are listed in order measured. Depth, Temperature-compensated conductivity, Temperature Bare, 10.74mS, 24.2C, labeled 10cm Red, 8.81*mS, 23.8C *this sample measured in uncompensated mode, so it was measured again at the end. I would probably just ignore this reading. Blue, 13.65mS, 28.4C, labeled 30cm Yellow, 13.27mS, 22.8C, labeled 40cm Green, 10.30mS, 24.2C, labeled 50cm Surface, 3.35mS, 21.7C Red, 11.21mS, 22.4C, labeled 20cm Bare, 10.36mS, 22.5C, labeled 10cm Green, 10.21mS, 22.8C, labeled 50cm We wrapped up at 12:10 PDT and had lunch before heading to Gilbert Tract. On our way out, we passed two guys in a Ducks Unlimited truck by the gas pipeline. They are working on a planned 10,000 acre wetland restoration project, I assume near to Mayberry. They hope to finish the design by next summer and asked if we had million laying around to fund it. |
