Summary: Little caterpillar herbivory in southwest area of wetland. Far fewer caterpillars visible. Water low at Low Veg site, high at permanent tower. Tower check, data collection, water samples, chopped veg around boardwalk. Swapped out Ameriflux instruments for
Mayberry 2014-08-19 Portable Tower We arrived at the Low Veg portable tower site at about 10:20 PDT. It was windy, sunny, and cool. Before we went to the tower we stopped on top of the levee and viewed the whole site. The southeastern portion of the wetland is quite green. We checked this area up close and found very little caterpillar herbivory. It seems that the most strongly affected areas have a large proportion of the thin cattail species. The thick species does show signs of herbivory, but far less. It also appears that the herbivory is dropping off, we only saw a few caterpillars munching away today. The water was quite low in the northwestern (Low Veg) site. I checked the tower and downloaded the data while Sara took water samples. I fixed TC #4, it was wired incorrectly. The sonic tines were askew, fixed. After looking at the data, the sonic showed far less dropouts after Joe tied the cables to the pole last week. Took pictures and took tower measurements: Sonic N = 348 N magnetic. Tower height = 4.04 m from mid-sonic to bed of truck, 81 cm bed to berm, 60 cm berm to water = 5.45 m total Readings CO2: 386 ppm (391 after cleaning) H2O: 705 mmol m-3 (680 after cleaning) signal strength = 90.73% (91.78 after cleaning) t: 19.9 °C p = 101.0 kPa sos = 344.1 m s-1 CH4: 1.9 ppm RSSI: 52% (72% after cleaning) Topped off reservoir. Permanent Tower Although the water level was low at the Low Veg site, it was normal to high at the permanent tower. Collected data and took water samples. Swapped out GHG system – removed Ameriflux instruments and installed ours (7700 came back from repair). Removed 7700 sn TG1-0352, 7500 sn 75H-2339, 7550 sn AIU-0915. Installed 7700 sn TG1-0224, 7500 sn 75H-2514, 7550 sn AIU-1285. I returned the Ameriflux instruments (including cables) to Stephen after we got back to Berkeley. Chopped the veg around the boardwalk. Much easier to get to the tower now. Sara cleaned the Forerunner CO2 probe and the DO probe. She raised the DO probe to about 10 cm below the surface. Readings: CO2: 385 ppm (same after cleaning, same after swap) H2O: 760 mmol m-3 (same after cleaning, 700 after swap) signal strength = 96.1% (96.4% after cleaning, 100.08% after swap) t: 22 °C p = 101.0 kPa (same after swap) sos = 345.5 m s-1 CH4 = 2.1 ppm (same after swap) RSSI = 60% (73% after swap) Topped off reservoir. Met looked good. Cleaned rad. The rad boom over the water was dirty. |
