Summary: Continuing root survey with GPR, pits and cores.

I arrived about 9am with Dennis and Melanie. Laurie, Ricardo, Hanna and Naama arrived a little later. It was warm and sunny with little wind. We continued to do the root survey with GPR, coarse root pits and fine root cores.

Naama and I stared on a third tree. Today we started staking down the grid lines with metal pegs in the corners and 3” deck screws for the grid lines. This kept things together much better. We also sorted out the direction and order of the grid lines. The third tree was located on the hill to the south west of the tower. Two pits were marked to the north and south of the tree. A big root was found in the south pit. The north pit was very shallow.

Naama and I did a forth tree to the south west of the second tree and a little higher on the hill. Again, pits were setup to the south and north of the tree. Both pits here were very shallow.

Then we set up a 8m by 6.8m grid in a group of trees further to the south and a little on the south slope of the hill. A cow path goes passed east-west just north of this cluster. The grid was oriented with the long side in a roughly N-S direction and the short side in the E-W direction.
