I arrived at Tonzi about 9:30 with Dennis, Hanna and Ricardo. We were joined shortly by Laurie, Siyan, and Naama. It was warm and sunny with a little breeze. The goal was to begin a root survey with GPR, coarse root pits and fine root cores.

The tram was running. Dennis calibrated the CO2 profile system. Siyan measured the Moisture Point probes near Liukang’s tree.

Laurie, Ricardo, Dennis Hanna and Siyan dug pits around a small tree and a large tree to the north west of the soil co2 fence. They also worked on soil cores some with in the soil co2 cow fence.

Naama and I setup and 8m x 8m grid with 20cm line spacing around the large tree just outside the soil co2 profile cow fence. We used triangles to get the square nearly square. I think we dragged the y lines in reverse order for 8m to 0m in the x asis. We marked the pits 2m long and 0.5m wide with the GPR. The pits started 0.5m on the south side of the tree and 1.5m from the tree on the north side. Only the 1m closest to the tree was excavated. A big root was found in the south pit. On this first tree we skipped the Y grid lines that intersected the tree, there after we broke the grid lines that intersected the trees and detoured around the tree.

Naama and I also did a grid in a cluster of trees further to the north west. This grid was 8m in a roughly N-S direction by 4m in a roughly E-W direction with 20cm line spacing. Again we had problems with the orientation of the X and Y lines and had to redo the Y lines. Two pits were also marked here, one if the center of the cluster and one of the outer south edge of the cluster.
