Summary: Quick stop for storm prep, Bruce said half of Twitchell Island lost power
2023-01-03 West Pond Joe and I arrived around 13:50 PST. It was cold and overcast and relatively still. We’ve had two big storms in the last week (Dec 26-27 and Dec 31), and another big one coming tomorrow (an "atmospheric river bomb cyclone”). More storms forecast for this weekend and next week, too. Today is a quick stop to visually check the tower and sensors after the first set of storms and before the next one. We cleared a few willow branches blocking the road. Some of the willows have buds already. The inlet was off but I could see water under the tower. On our way in we ran into Bruce driving around checking on things before the next storm. He said half of the island was without power, and without power they can’t pump water. The water level in the main channel looked ok today but turn off to the rice fields was flooded. We noticed there was some condensation in the 7550 box, so we put in 2 small desiccant packs. Joe also added a wooden shim behind the box so that water pooled in the lid edges would flow away from the box interior. The bottom boardwalk here needs to be replaced. We’ll be back on Friday to collect the data. |
