Summary: Installation of Sedpoint2 for permanent monitoring of porewaters and porewater sampling

Roc and I arrived at around 10 am at West Pond. It was a sunny warm day with no wind. The wetland is still dry but there were some puddles of standing water at the tower. Staff gauge water level was at 24 cm.

We installed sedpoints at the tower, 0.5, 0.8 and 0.85 footprint locations. Sedpoints were inserted to 10, 30 and 50 cm into the soil using an installation tool with a T handle. The 0.5 footprint site had sedpoints installed to 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 cm. All tubes were labelled with the corresponding depths but will replace these labels with color coded electrical tape. Washed sand was used to fill in the space between the soil and the sedpoints followed by powdered bentonite to seal the borehole as there was no standing water. I hydrated the bentonite with DI after putting it in the hole.

Once sedpoints were installed, we sampled porewaters from -10 to -50 cm using a peristaltic pump connected to a car battery. I need to find smaller batteries for next time. The water table was at around -30 cm in all sites except at the tower, where it was at the soil surface. Conductivity of porewaters increased with depth and ranged between 535 and 887 uS. Similarly, this was observed for salinity (0.35-0.53 ppt) and pH (5.93 -7.1).

Readings at the tower at - 30 cm were:
Conductivity: 638 uS
Salinity: 0.42 ppt
pH: 6.16
Temp: 11.8 C

Standing water was sampled at the outlet (downstream side as there was no water upstream) and the inlet was opened at the end of the day (4:12 pm) to collect a sample representative of the river endmember. After sample collection the inlet was closed back up again.

We left at 4:20 pm
