Summary: Maintenance visit, swapped CTD, replaced middle boardwalk

2024-04-16
Gilbert Tract

Joe and I arrived at 14:15 PST (15:15 PDT) for a maintenance visit. It was warm and muggy with cattail fluff flying everywhere. At least it wasn’t too windy. There were some wasps buzzing around the middle boardwalk when we arrived; we knocked off a tiny nest. I trimmed plants back from around the boardwalk pier and along our path to the tower.

The staff gauge read 42cm at 14:47 PST. I measured the surface water conductivity.

Sample, Temperature-compensation conductivity, Temperature, Notes
Surface, 320 uS, 14.9C

Joe removed the old middle boardwalk (it had a big crack in the wood) and put in a boardwalk we removed earlier today from West Pond. He disassembled the old boardwalk (half a bolt sheared off); we left the old wood on the ground below the tower to act as mulch, and brought the metal pieces back to the lab.

I downloaded the met data. Joe checked on CTD sn H21G20001202 that was not working, turns out an animal had chewed the wire and it was broken in at least 2 places. We removed it and brought it back to the lab for further testing. We installed CTD sn H21G200002433 that we had removed earlier today from Hill Slough. I changed its SDI-12 address from 1 to 0 to match the GT_met datalogger code. After wiring it in to C7, I checked that all sensors attached to that control port (CTD, RH/T, PRI) had ok data.
To prevent future damage to the water sensor cables, Joe put two of the three cables into some split loom and we coiled the excess by the extension box, instead of by the end of the boardwalk. Next time we bring some more split loom, we can protect the third cable.

Joe also checked the Campbell conductivity sensor as part of its routine check every 3 months. The orifice looked clear.

In the previous camera card swap last week, we were missing about 10 days of photos since 2024-04-02. Today I checked the files on the card through FileControl, and the photos looked complete. I did not swap camera cards.

We left at 15:20 PST (16:20 PDT).
