Summary: Today's goal was to sample the sippers Daphne and I had installed on Monday

Jackie Reu and I arrived at Mayberry around 10:30am. It was overcast with little to no wind.

We started with the blue profile (the profile closest to the tower). This profile is fully screened. It was difficult to pull the samples, but we learned through trial and error that the most effective way was to pull a vaccuum on the sipper, close the valve off and let it sit for a few minutes, then try pulling again. Eventually we were able to sample the 20cm, 40cm, and 50 cm depths. Conductivities were generally lower than they were late last fall.

Next we sampled the black profile (profile on the left side of the boardwalk as you face the tower). From this we were able to get samples from 10, 30, 40, and 50cm depth. Values were similar to the blue profile. Half-screened sippers were generally easier to sample, but the stopcocks often got clogged.

The red profile (to the right side of the boardwalk as you face the tower) had noticeably lower conductivity values. We were able to sample all but the 30cm depth, which kept clogging.

This experience has showed me that all sippers should be fully screened and we need a peristaltic pump to make sampling easier. IF we cannot get an appropriate pump, then at the very least we need one valve per sipper so we can let them sit under vacuum at the same time to speed the sampling process along.

On the way back we saw a raccoon sitting in a tree near the river. After a few seconds of looking at us it jumped back down into the cattails on the riverbank.
