Summary: Lots of wasps, Rnet bent and soil TC loose at T2, T1 okay, Main tower eclipse met program
East End 2017-08-16 Ada, Daphne and I arrived about 1pm. It was hot and sunny with a light breeze. Lots of wasps especially at the main tower and the Boardwalk Temp Tower #3. Temporary Tower 2 – Closed Canopy Standard data collection. The 7500 read: 386.5ppm CO2, 717.5mmol/m3 H2O, 27.7C, 100.8kPa, 91.8SS – 92.5 after cleaning The 7700 read: 1.98ppm CH4, 42.5RSSI – 68.9 after cleaning I installed a new post on the northwest corner of the tower to mount the camera higher. I moved the camera enclosure but we need a longer power cable when the camera is reinstalled. There was dead bird on the net radiometer, attacking wasps, and it was bent down. I cleaned it then leveled it and tightened its screws. I also notice the set screws on the main eddy mount had not been tightened as well as the bolts holding the sonic on. I tightened all of these. Daphne found the TC stick to the northwest floating on its side. She reinstalled it with the red tape at the mud surface. We left at 1:30 Temporary Tower 1 – Open Water Standard data collection. The Licor 7550 is running v8.5.0 but didn’t show up in the v8.5.0 Windows software. It did show up in the v8.7.5 software with a yellow indicator but connected okay. The 7500 read: 383.9ppm CO2, 751.1mmol/m3 H2O, 27.1C, 101.6kPa, 103.3SS – 103.9 after cleaning The 7700 read: 1.99ppm CH4, 64.2RSSI – 70 after cleaning Daphne swapped the battery at the met station. Permanent Tower We arrived about 2pm. A ton of wasps buzzing around this tower, but no obvious nests. Ada got stung through her sock near her ankle. The 7500 read: 408.5ppm CO2, 666.5mmol/m3 H2O, 28.1C, 101.2kPa, 92.9SS – 94.2 after cleaning. The 7700 read: 1.97ppm CH4, 44.8RSSI – 87.5 after cleaning. Daphne collected the met data and then loaded a new data logger program that has a secondary table to collect 10sec data for the eclipse. The fill times are 15 days on the 30min data and 5 to 6 days on the 10sec data. Temporary Tower 3 – Boardwalk We arrived at about 2:25. There were even more wasps here and nests in the met and eddy data logger boxes. Both mud and comb nests. We cleared out the nests, added putty to the cable entries and put some moth balls in each box. We should also check the solar charge controller box next time. After collecting the met data the computer freaked out and was super slow to reboot claiming to be fixing things so we could not look at the eddy sensors. We swapped the CFM card and watched for the status LED to indicate it was okay. I cleaned the eddy sensors. The sonic heading is 20 degrees west of magnetic north. The 7700 is 26cm southeast of the sonic and the 7500 is 20cm east of the sonic. The spikes on the sonic were all bent out of place as well as the spikes on the 7700. I straightened the spike on the sonic as best I could but it needs some new ones. |
