Summary: Scouted out location for Corn tower by Duck Hunting Club building, Met with Farmer
We met with David Forkel (representative of the owner of Bouldin Island), the farmer Mark Swall, as well as the farm manager John Meek, from Sierra Cattle at the equipment storage shed on the east end of Bouldin Island at 9am. After a quick introduction and explaining in general what we are planning to do we headed out to the Duck hunting club building where we want to set up our tower. We had a really good meeting with those three. They are fine with us setting up an eddy covariance tower and soil chamber system on the South-East corner of the corn field by the duck hunting club building. We decided to set up the tower at the edge of the field so we won't have to move it when they plant/harvest (Lat./Long.: 38.1090680, -121.5350469). There is power at the duck barn, but it is not clear who is being billed for that at the moment. Dave and Mark recommended that we contact PG&E and get the bill transfered to us from now on. Nobody else is using this building at the moment and the building itself is empty. If we just tap into the power without getting the bill transfered there might be questions from either PG&E or the duck hunting club (if they still get the bill) and we might end up having the power shut off at some point. They are planning to plant corn within the next 10 days from yesterday weather permitting. The field was being disked yesterday morning while we were out there and the soil looked nice and dark. The corn will be harvested for silage, so it will be harvested when it is still wet sometime in September rather than at the end of October or in November as is customary for grain corn. I also talked to the farmer about soil and plant sampling. He did not seem to have an issue with us taking either, but he mentioned that he would be interested in seeing the results. Specifically he is interested in getting a value for Magnesium content in soil, since that seems to be very high on the island according to his experience, and the nitrogen content in plant tissue. We should make sure we get those numbers to him when we do get soil and or plants analyzed. Our main contact for field work will still remain Ben, but here are the contact details of the three people we talked to yesterday in case we have more general questions: Mark Swall (Farmer) 599 804 0600 msfarming (at) msn.com John B.
