Summary: Initial set up of this site, installation on power line, waiting on end of tractor work before moving soil sensors into the field.
Bouldin Corn 2017-04-26 I arrived about 10:30 with Daphne, Sam and Kyle. Today is the initial setup of this site. It was cloudy and drizzly at first but after lunch it became party cloudy and very windy with gusts to 11m/s. The fields to the west are completely plowed. The field to the east has a small patch near the duck club building still unplowed possibly because it was too wet. It does not look like the fields have been planted yet. Kyle and Sam took the truck to get the scaffolding we left by the south pump station while Daphne and I started on the power line. We ran a two conductor #10 with ground UF-B direct burial cable from the breaker panel at the east end of the building to the southeast corner of field 48. We stapled the cable to the building and porch near the ground. We used a rented trencher to dig a 12in deep trench from the northwest corner of the porch, just past the end of a north-south drainage ditch to the tower location. It crosses both roads at a diagonal. The cable is in 3/4in plastic conduit at the bottom of the trench. At the building I added a 20A breaker to the electrical panel to supply our line. A Campbell enclosure on the tower holds a box with four standard outlets and a lab power supply for 12VDC. The tower went up as planned. Two levels of 5ft frames with railings on top. We did not have the cross braces for the railings so we tried to manufacture some from 3/4in metal conduit, but the drill battery kept dying. One length still needs to be installed. The soil sensors are all installed near the southern edge of the scaffolding to protect them from any more tractor work. They will be move out into the field later.
