Summary: Slept through alarms and started pre-dawn water potentials late; pressure bomb tank ran out of gas after 3 trees, readings not completed.
| WHO: Nancy Kiang, Nina Kilham (technician in Tracy Benning's lab) WHERE: Tonzi Ranch WHEN: overnight, Thursday-Friday, 5/10-11/01 WEATHER: 94°F, clear, hot, ground dry and grasses turning brown in open areas WHAT: - Move sapflow sensors to fresh position on tree. - Measure pre-dawn water potential of sapflow trees - Measure LAI of sapflow trees - Take stem and soil samples for water isotopes. - Install dendrometer bands. 5:00, Pre-dawn water potential measurements started at 5:00 DST (unfortunately, we slept through our alarms, which were set to 4:00 am). Started measuring at Set Q, 2 leaves per sapflow tree: water potentials all around -2.0 to -2.5 bar. Ended measurements with Set P at 6:20 DST, sky already light but sun not risen yet. The water potentials at Set P were getting lower as the sky lightened, ending with -5.0 bar at 6:20 DST. 15:10 DST, Midday leaf water potentials started at Set P. Unfortunately, the pressure bomb tank ran out of gas after just measuring 3 trees. We re-filled the small canister at the lab and re-filled the pressure bomb on 5/10/01, but the tank only reached 500 bar, uncertain why. Next time, carefully check the pressure of the re-fill tank at the lab. Data are in TonziLeafWaterPotential.xls. Dendrometer bands Installed dendrometer bands on the following trees ~ 4 cm above position of sapflow sensors: Tree Band reading 248 250 72 5.3 77 5.1 79 5.2 Stayed Friday night 5/11/01 at the Jackson-Gold Lodge, (209) 223-0486 - very comfortable motel that will give us government discount. |
