Tonzi: 2001-05-10 12:00:00 (DOY 130)
Author: Nancy Kiang
Others: Nina Kilham

Summary: Two saplow sensors broken in process of moving. Predawn water potential, install dendrometer bands

WHO: Nancy Kiang, Nina Kilham (technician in Tracy Benning's lab)
WHERE: Tonzi Ranch
WHEN: overnight, Thursday-Friday, 5/10-11/01
WEATHER: 94°F, clear, hot, ground dry and grasses turning brown in open
areas
WHAT:
- Move sapflow sensors to fresh position on tree.
- Measure pre-dawn water potential of sapflow trees
- Measure LAI of sapflow trees
- Take stem and soil samples for water isotopes.
- Install dendrometer bands.

Thursday, 5/10, arrived at noon DST.

Moved sapflow sensors at Set Q:
Unplugged power to CR10X4 at 13:00 DST.
Moved sapflow sensors at Set Q near understory tower: drilled new holes
~7 cm to right or left of original holes. Unfortunately, two sensors were
broken in the process, due to needles coming apart when pulled:
Tree 245 - heater previously burned out
Tree 248 - okay
Tree 250 - okay
Tree 252 - busted bottom orange-red-green thermocouple needle
Tree 255 - busted heater needle
Re-started CR10X4 at 15:30.

Due to the problem of needles breaking, the sensors at Set P were NOT
moved, as these have been operating flawlessly since they were installed.
Consulted Steve Burgess, and he says he tries to avoid moving the sensors
due to the problem of breakage, and he moves the needles in eucalyptus
only once a year.

Water isotope samples
5/10/01, 14:30 DST, Kevin Tu arrived. Took two 10 cc water samples from Mr. Tonzi's well.
Nancy and Nina cut twigs from sapflow trees and took soil cores to put in
Teflon vials. Samples were taken at ~15:00 Standard Time, as this is the
time when the tree should have achieved steady flow. Samples for each of
4 sampled trees were: one vial of twigs and two soil cores from a 10-15 cm
depth at 1 m and 2 m south of the sampled tree.
Tree 248, sampled ~ 16:00 on 5/10/01
Tree 250, sampled ~ 16:00 on 5/10/01
Tree 72, sampled twigs ~16:00 on 5/10/01, soil cores ~16:00 on
5/11/01
Tree 77, sample twigs ~16:00 on 5/10/01, soil cores ~16:00 on
5/11/01
(also, for practice initially, got just twigs from Tree 98 on
5/10/01, not sapflow tree)

Leaf Area Index
Due to time constraints, only transects T1 and T2 were measured. T1 was
measured after dusk on 5/10/01, and T2 was measured after dusk on 5/11/01.
Sunset occurred at approximately 20:00 DST. Individual sapflow trees were
not measured this time.

Leaf Water Potential
5/10/01 afternoon, flagged branches from which leaf water potential would
be sampled. South branches were selected, but other sides of the tree
were selected if no south branches were accessible.

Tree# Height of branch on trunk [m] NESW
245 1.5 S
248 5.8 S
252 6.2 N
255 4.8 S

71 5 S
72 3 S
77 3 S
78 5
