Summary: HUNGRY cows, reinstalled Vaisala CO2 soil profile, reinstall HMP45 in RH/Temp profile, removed folding arm, fix multiple breaks in tower fence.

I arrived about 1pm with Patty. The car was mobbed by hungry cows. We slowly poked our way through the herd but they followed us all the way to the soil CO2 fence and then hung out waiting for us to feed them. It was overcast with a very light breeze and began to rain lightly when we left about 2:30pm. Irish Hill Road was damp on the way in.

Patty reinstalled the CO2 probes in the Open and Tree 1 profiles. The Tree 2 profile was not installed because one of the probes was broken. The tops of the PVC enclosures got new U-shaped fitting so that the opening is pointed down. The existing rubber plugs donâ€™t fit the new fittings well. We need to add pipe inserts so the plugs fit tighter. Two of the 1% probes were traded to Sherman from two 3% probes.

The Open profile got:

The Tree 1 profile got:

4cm, sn X5050014, 1%
8cm, sn G0150036, 3%, from Sherman

While Patty worked on the soil profile, I worked on the tower. I replaced the second from bottom HMP45 for the RH/temp profile. All readings were in a reasonable range.

Cows had gotten inside the fence and chewed on some wires. Most of the damage was to a serial cable that is no longer used, but they also chewed the power line for the RH/temp profile. I fixed the power line. While I was working several of the calves pushed their way through the fence. I walked the fence and found several places where it was broken. I fixed the breaks, but the fence charger was not in the green when we left. I need to bring more wire next time out.

I also removed another of the old wind profile folding arms from the tower for possible use at Mayberry.

The CO2 profile system seemed to be working okay. The tram was running when we got there.
