Summary: Windy, shadowband missing, installed sonic rangefinder at channel, installed CTD at channel to replace one that was removed previously

Hill Slough

Dennis and I arrived at 8:15 PST (9:15 PDT). The green wedge of tules/cattails on the west side of Highway 12 seems to have grown more to the south. It was mild and sunny and
SO windy. It was near high tide and the staff gauge read 5.5 ft at 8:39 PST.

Dennis was listening to a dean’s meeting on his phone, so I got started with the regular tower servicing.

I downloaded met, cam, and USB GHG data. The shadowband for dfPAR was missing—probably blown away and never to be found. I changed the 7700 heater from winter to summer hours. Previously, the heater turned on from 18:00 to 09:00, now the heater will turn on from 20:00 to 06:00. I topped off the wash reservoir and cleaned flux and rad sensors.

I measured the porewater and surface water conductivity.

Sample, Temperature-compensated conductivity, Temperature
Surface, 2024uS, 17.1C
Porewater, 5.57mS, 17.4C

At the channel, I installed a new sonic rangefinder sn 76294-1 in the CR23X (5V power, SE data). I screwed the rangefinder to the bottom of the boardwalk near the EXO and miniDOT. We are hoping this will give us backup water level data when the other sensors are out of the water.

I also installed HYDROS21 CTD sn H21G20001202 on the CR23X, which has a shorter cable after being chewed at GT. I couldn’t remember what the SDI-12 address was (tried both 0 and 2), so I wired it briefly to the tower CR1000 to use LoggerNet’s Terminal Emulator. I changed the SDI-12 address from 6 to 0. The Teflon filter for the atmospheric pressure vent had to be cut off, so it needs additional
desiccant like the Campbell water level sensors. I had a tube of dry desiccant, but forgot to put it on. Next time.

I updated the channel CR23X program to add in the sonic rangefinder (the CTD was already in the program). I also updated the tower CR1000 program to add in a new data column for the sonic rangefinder. I will need to make a new stream field version next time I upload HS met data.

The 7500 read: 414ppm CO2, 579 mmol/m3 H2O, 16.5C, 101.6kPa, 98SS -- 98 after cleaning
The 7700 read: 1.97ppm CH4, 45RSSI – 77 after cleaning

We left at 9:45 PST (10:45 PDT).
