Summary: Moved soil sensors in the field, cold and windy
2023-11-30 Bouldin Corn Joe and I arrived at 16:05 PST on our way home from Tonzi/Vaira. This was a quick stop to move the soil sensors from under the tower to the field. It was cold with a chilly breeze and partly cloudy. Our field was filled with geese and a group of hunters were drinking beer and hanging out on the Duck Club porch during golden hour. While we were there, two of the hunters shot a handful of geese on our field. Their dog raced out into the field to retrieve the wounded and carcasses. Our field is still dry and I don’t see any signal yet from the water level sensor, which is about 70cm below the surface. Charlotte’s chambers are still out in the un-tilled area of the field. Some fields to the west might have had water on them or maybe just a bunch of white birds. One of the hunters, Rick, came to ask Joe if they could access real-time data. They exchanged cell phone numbers and Joe will try to get them setup with the on-demand Arable link. Joe asked Rick about waders, too; apparently the only waders that last for long will be 0 (Kuiu, Sitka). Joe removed the sensors from below the tower. For the sensors removed, one SHF plate was right at the surface, almost exposed to the air. The other two SHF plates were the expected 2cm below the surface. One Campbell VWC probe body was only 5cm below the surface, while the other two Campbell VWC probes were the expected 10cm below the surface. We had to re-tape the bottom thermocouple on two of the profiles because they had slid way up. Joe re-installed the soil sensors in the field in the un-tilled zone right in front of the tower. The top of the Theta probe tine was 20cm below the surface. The northern-most Campbell VWC’s body was 10cm below the surface, while the other two Campbell VWC’s (middle sn 17129, south sn 17128) body were 15cm below the surface. I downloaded the met and flux data only and cleaned the flux sensors (not the rad sensors). The 7500 read: 422ppm CO2, 417mmol/m3 H2O, 14.6C, 101.3kPa, 102SS after cleaning The 7700 read: 1.99ppm CH4, 40RSSI--72 after cleaning We left at 16:38 PST and drove home through dusk. |
