Summary: Hot and dry, Carlos's first visit - watch out from them foxtails! Installed three SoilVUE soil moisture profile probes, power seems okay, went to the pond.

Carlos and I arrived at about 10:30 PDT. It was warm and sunny and dry with just a few high thin clouds. It looked like the wind was blowing hard when we drove through Sacramento, but here just a nice breeze. The last three days have been really hot. The grasses are mostly yellow and crispy.

We measured the well level together and then installed three new SoilVUE10 soil moisture profile sensors provided by the Ameriflux year of water. These sensors provide six readings at -5, -10, -20, -30, -40 and -50cm of soil moisture, temperature, electrical conductivity and permittivity. To install we had to dig 60cm deep holes with a standard 5 cm (2-inch) hand auger. This proved difficult as we hit hard material three times and had to find a new spot to try. Moving over just 40cm could make the difference. Once you had a hole you wetted the sides with water and then screwed in the sensor. The sensors use SDI-12 as each provides 24 columns of data. I added a slow sequence to the existing CR1000 met program to sample these probes every 10min using a concurrent (C!) SDI-12 command. It’s possible that using the measure command (M!) might be better but an M! has to be issued for each depth so six per probe. The probes installed were:
B: sn 2690 5.4m at heading 345deg about halfway between the eddy tower and radiation tower
C: sn 2679 7.7m at heading 26deg near the solar panels and the old Moisture Point probe
A: sn 2677 5.3m at heading 220deg about a meter outside the fence near the gate.
I saw readings from the first two after we returned from the pond but not for 2677

I downloaded the flux, met, camera and FD data. Still having serial port problems even with new USB adapter. I didn’t see any dropped data this time so the power issues seem to have been fixed for now. I lost the screen shot of the 7500 numbers when the laptop restarted due to the serial port.

We went to the pond. The stream is still running well but the pond is going down. I did not see any cows and left the fence power off.

Carlos did spectra while I made a last check on the new probes on the way out.
