Summary: Cows ate through PAR line sensor cord, coax cable for data loggers, and surface level soil moisture cable.

Sunday Nov 19, 324

Went to Vaira ranch and down loaded data. We arrived around 1030 and stayed until about 1430.

1. Cows ate through PAR line sensor cord
2. Cows ate coax cable to data loggers. It was functioning, but I cut and fixed it.
3. Cows ate cable on the surface level soil moisture sensor
4. Swapped LICORs 7500. Installed sn 0042 with new zero and calibration.
5. Checked PAR Sensors 990021 is facing upward and is on channel 3, after net and pyranometer.
6. We checked levels of radiation sensors. They looked good
7. Added a 6th battery to the array. Though the power system has been running well, I was concerned about nightly draw down to 11.9 v.
8. Added black hole to legs of the radiation stand to minimize reflectance from the aluminum. The solid angle is small, compared to the sky, but it is a worthwhile additional measure.
9. Measured the ‘zero’ value of the soil moisture sensors with dry dirt. The values were about 0.07 to 0.09 v. Problem is even the zero value is a function of bulk density and it is difficult to recreate it well with the small soil cans. I put them in a bigger can that was less packed. I notice the value went from about 0.07 to 0.09 as I packed the soil more. The instrument guide gives a ball park value of about 0.05v
10. Took four samples of plant matter. Forgot to measure canopy height. The new grid is 0.20 square.
11. Added extra fence posts to firm up the protection grids
12. Winds tend to come from the east at night. We need to check this out more, as fetch is short from that direction. Are we getting ‘Sierra’ Scale drainage at night.
13. No cows at site today. Grass is growing some.
14. Having to edit the CR10x files, as the midnight value is on the other day. Otherswise the MD9 file changing files are working.

Zeros on soil moisture sensors

Ch 1: xxxx v; loc 20; sensor 15
Ch 2: 0.0705 v; loc 21; sensor 16
Ch 3: 0.08262 v; loc 22; sensor 17
Ch 4: xxxx v; loc 23; sensor 19
Ch 5: 0.07 v; loc 24; sensor 20

The other sensors are buried at 20 cm, so we will assume similar values

Despite our concern of the magnitude of the KZ par sensor it agrees with the LICOR, and the LICOR says it has a 604 ohm voltage divider.
