Summary: Water level low to reduce erosion. Observed constant ebullition. All well.

East End Wetland
2014-05-29

We arrived about 14:30 PDT. It was hot and sunny with a nice breeze. No significant plant growth yet. The water level has dropped considerably. In surrounding checks, only the channels are filled with water. In our check, much of the surface is still inundated but there is a large patch to the SW where the surface is exposed. I talked to Jim who reported that the water level has been lowered to reduce erosion of the berms. There is a ~8” diameter pipe sitting on the surface along the berm from the north end of the check to the tower. Perhaps to reduce erosion?

While I was downloading data, I followed a trail of bubbles to a point source that was frequently bubbling. At one point I also saw a larger bubble release from a spot about 4m away from the first. I think this indicates subsurface gas channels where gas flows laterally toward a point of low resistance to be released, and the currently low water pressure is facilitating the release of stored CO2 & CH4. It will be interesting to see the fluxes during this drawdown.

Downloaded data. No camera images. Patty found one of the power wires disconnected. Restart fine.

7500 readings:
CO2 = 15.2 mmol m-3 (15.6 after cleaning)
H2O = 369 mmol m-3 (315 after cleaning)
p = 101.3 kPa
t = 29.1 C
Diag: 248 (same after cleaning)
Sos: 346.8 m s-1

7700 readings:
CH4: 1.9 ppm
RSSI: 44% (58% after cleaning)
Reservoir was full.

MET looked good.
Cleaned Rad.
