I arrived about 10:30 with Sara and Melanie. It was sunny and warm with a strong wind from the west kicking up dust from the field. Tractors were planting the check closest to the main road. It looked like the checks on either side of our tower had already been planted.

We installed the solar panels and the met and flux equipment.

The solar panels were attached to the south side of the scaffolding at the top of the first layer. The panels are at about a 30 degree tilt with the lower end away from the scaffolding supported by metal pipes pushed into the ground and fastened to the scaffolding with treated 2x4s fastened to both at the ground level. The two panels are connected to four deep cycle batteries with a charge controller. The batteries are on a scaffolding boardwalk under the panels hooked on to the treated 2x4s and straddling the ditch. When we left about 3pm PDT the charge controller was reading 13.6V, 11.4A solar, 0.6A load.

The data logger box was hung on the northwest corner of the scaffolding facing north at a comfortable level to work in while standing. The ground sensors were put in along the edge of the field. I wanted to check with Bryan and Jim to make sure the tractors were done in the field. I dug a well with the posthole digger and put the water pressure sensor neat the bottom (~120cm below ground level). Soon after digging the hole the water level was 60cm below the surface.

The radiometers were hung on a pipe attached to the top railing on the northwest corner of the scaffolding and extending to the west. The PAR sensors are about out of wire and will need to be spliced if they are to be hung on a folding boom.

The flux sensors and HMP60 were mounted on top of a vertical post attached to the top railing on the southwest corner of the scaffolding. The cables for the sonic and LI7550 box were just barely long enough and will need to be lengthened when these sensors are moved to a boom. The Li7550 box is mounted on the bottom part of the railing post on the southwest corner.

All was running when we left.

Whendee Silver, Wendy Yang, and another arrived shortly before we left survey the site for their chamber work and take soil samples.
