Summary: Standard field work, new sunset z-cam program works, strange growths on tree leaves, broke tree corer, trees beginning to yellow.

2011-08-31 I arrived about 10:30am PDT with Siyan and Laurie. It was clear, sunny and hot with a little breeze on the ground and a much stronger breeze from the west at the top of the tower. The grass and ground is very dry. The trees look okay, but some are yellowing and some were losing leaves in the breeze. I serviced the z-cams. The new CR10x and CR200 programs that take photos in relation to sunset seem to be working. On August 9th the photos started at 4pm PST and by August 31st the photos started at 3:30pm PST. An advance of almost half an hour. Radiation sensors at the top of the tower were clean. Some bird droppings on the IRGa but I think the path was okay. The tanks for the CO2 profile system read 1600psi of N2 and 1000psi of CO2. Siyan did standard field work. Tram was running. The Floor computer was hung up again. Its data shows that it has been running sporadically quitting and starting at random times of the day. I need to rebuild some field computers. I helped Laurie pull cores for trees near the soil CO2 fence. The big tree (Luikang’s tree) seems to be hollow or rotten in the center. We broke the corer on a small tree. I found some strange looking growths on many of the oak trees. Some of them were bright pink, spiky growths of different sizes on the surface of the leaves. Others were more yellow or green on the stems. There were also small spheres and some fuzzy pink growths. |
