Dennis, Arman, Jo Owens and I arrived at about 11:45 PDT. Jo is here from Australia where she works on an eucalyptus savanna site. This is Arman’s first visit to Tonzi. It was clear and sunny with a few wispy high clouds. The grass is sprouting! We could see big green patches mostly under the trees driving in but it is pretty wide spread. We got some rain shortly after the last visit that must have kicked things off, but it has been dry since. Maybe some more rain coming in the next week though. We saw a deer as we approached the tower.

I started work on the Floor battery bank. The Floor had been losing early morning data for a few days last time we were here. I turned off the power and disconnected all the batteries. There are two pairs of batteries – one battery in each pair was completely dead. The dead batteries seemed to be shorted inside. All the batteries were very low on water. I put about a half a gallon of DI water in each of the two batteries that tested good. Adding water to one of the dead ones made no difference. I reconnected things with just the single pair of batteries and all seemed well.

Arman rebuilt the cow fence around the Floor solar panels while I worked on the batteries. Cows had completely destroyed the fence. Dennis and Jo did the Moisture Point soil moisture.

I collected the Floor flux and well data, downloaded the FD data and read the dendrometers.
The Floor read: 428.9ppm CO2, 258.8mmol/m3 H2O, 24.4C, 99.6kPa, 99.9SS

Arman has experience in stem/leaf water potential and did a great job with those measurements. He says our method results in leaf water potential. And if we want stem water potential we have to put the leaves in a humid, dark bag for about 10min to shut down the photosynthesis.

Dennis measured the well depths, I serviced the z-cams.

At the end I collect the tower Flux, met and camera data.
The Tower read: 434.3ppm CO2, 282.2mmol/m3 H2O, 25.9C, 99.4kPa, 100.6SS

We left at about 14:30 PDT.
