Summary: Regular data collection/cleaning, very tall vegetation, losing data overnight--needs more attention, measured sonic orientation

West Pond

Joe and I arrived at 13:30 PDT. It’s been three weeks since the last site visit. I meant to come last week but Kyle and I were sampling methane bubbles at Mayberry and ran out of time to finish all of the Delta sites. It was sunny and warm. The tule canopy is so tall that a few stalks were inside the 7700 path and surrounding the radiometers. Joe wielded the telescoping rake from the top of the tower to knock down vegetation from below the flux/rad boom. Amazing how often we use the telescoping rake for tasks other than clearing out submerged aquatic vegetation.

The inlet was on and the staff gauge read 75cm. I topped off the reservoir and left the enclosure lid open to discourage wasps.

I downloaded met, cam, picam, and USB GHG data. There were only photos until 2023-08-25 and the camera was off. We are missing overnight data almost every day. Joe knocked down tules in front of the panels and washed the panels. The batteries sn BB-WP were checked at the beginning of the year; two bad batteries were removed. Water levels of the remaining four batteries looked ok at that time, but something to check next time.

I downloaded the miniDOT data and swapped its batteries as part of its ~annual swap. I also swapped the desiccant for the miniDOT and water level sensors.

Joe cleaned flux and rad sensors. He said there’s a persistent spot on the 7700 lower mirror. He also measured the sonic orientation:
Orientation of bent boom = 290 deg mag N
Orientation of sonic on bent boom = 294 deg mag N
Orientation of extended boom = 0 deg mag N
Therefore, orientation of sonic on extended boom = 4 deg mag N (18 deg true N)

We left at 14:05 PDT.
