Summary: Regular data collection/cleaning, weeds are blooming, floating boom blown to west--fixed, porewater conductivity measurements
2023-05-31 Mayberry Carlos, Jerry Sun, and I arrived at 11:20 PDT. It's been a cool spring so it was a very pleasant day. It was mild and clear with a cool breeze. Jerry is an undergrad student exploring ideas for his senior thesis and today was his first time in the field. The pepperweed and hemlock are in full bloom. The wetland is continuing to green up and the staff gauge read 50cm. The floating boom had blown all the way to the west. I moved it to point north and tried to tighten the clamp, but the clamp nuts are rusted and hard to turn. Carlos and Jerry cleaned flux and rad sensors and topped off the wash reservoir. They noted big mud splatters on the water Rnet sensor. I downloaded met, cam, and USB GHG data. We sampled porewater and surface water for conductivity measurements. I showed Carlos and Jerry how to do the first one at 10cm, and they did the remaining samples. The tubing had fallen out of their ziptie and into the water. Carlos grabbed the rake to carefully pick them up from the water without disturbing their installation. We did three draws total, with each draw at least 10ml. The first draw was to rinse out the tubing and the syringe, the second draw was to pre-rinse out the vial and the conductivity probe, and the third draw was to sample. Between samples the vial and the conductivity probe were rinsed with DI water. Depth, Temperature-compensated conductivity, Temperature Bare, 11.84mS, 20.3C, labeled 10cm Red, 12.14mS, 20.0C, labeled 20cm Blue, 13.75mS, 22.0C, labeled 30cm Yellow, 13.67mS, 22.4C, labeled 40cm Green, 10.15mS, 21.2C, labeled 50cm Surface, 4.230mS, 19.9C The porewater is about the same (maybe slightly more saline) while the surface water is slightly fresher (from ~5mS to ~4mS). The sensor reported it as 4230 uS, but I recorded it above as mS to make it easier to read with the other mS measurements. Even though the air temperature was a cool 13C, the water was a nice warm 20-22C, probably a great temperature for respiration and other biological activity. While Carlos and Jerry worked on the porewater samples, I trimmed some of the weeds back from the path and washed the solar panels. We left at 12:20 PDT. |
