Summary: Another Moisture Point probe dead, Phenocam clock reset, midday water potential, Open FD Chamber did not pass performance check, replaced dendrometer, added water to Tower batteries.
Tonzi 2021-07-13 I arrived at about 11:50 PDT. It was clear, hot and sunny with a little bit of cool breeze. We are coming off several days for 100F (40C) weather. The trees look okay but everything on the ground is cooked except for some super hardy tarweed. The pond still has some water but it’s looking pretty scummy. I collected the Tower and Floor fluxes. I did the moisture point measurements – the ‘Under’ probe is dead. I serviced the z-cams, measured the wells (Floor cap was off), collected the other data loggers and checked clocks. The Stardot had lost its time – it read 2000-01-02 07:16 when I reset it to 2021-07-13 11:11. We use a relay to turn the camera off a sunset and back on at sunrise to avoid nighttime photos. The Stardot cameras seem to use a capacitor to keep their clocks running when power goes out but these have not been enough at other sites. At these other sites we keep the camera powered and turn off the network switch instead. At Tonzi the FLIR camera was running on the network 24hrs a day so that was not an option – but it is now since the FLIR is gone. The computer will try to collect Campbell data over the network at night but I don’t think the gap in connectivity will bother that. The Tower 7500 read: 407.7ppm CO2, 565.2umol/m3 H2O, 98.6kPa, 24.6C, 98.3SS The Floor 7500 read: 414.4ppm CO2, 577.7umol/m3 H2O, 98.7kPa, 30.1C, 97.9SS I did midday water potential. While I finished up the moisture point measurements I collected the FD chamber data and them did a performance check on chamber sn FD20180026. The performance check is an option from one of the menus and it samples both chambers five times comparing the values. If the chambers are exposed to the same air (lying on its side) the chambers should read the same and flux should be zero. At the end you have the option to reset the concentration back to 400ppm. This chamber had a significant difference between its ambient chamber (107ppm) and its soil chamber (146ppm) which resulted in a flux of about 0.8umol/m2/s. I’m not sure what’s wrong with this chamber but lying on its side in the sun may not be the best position. Next time I’ll figure out a way to prop it up off the ground vertically and try again. I did not test the other FD Chamber since its concentration hasn’t drifted much yet but maybe it’s a good idea to check it too. I replaced the dendrometer on tree 245 since the old one had lost both of its scales. I also measured the circumference during the swap. And tree 7 needs its dendrometer reset – this one has an allen set screw that could be replaced with a thumb screw. I checked the water level in the Tower batteries sn BB-TT. I added about 4.5 gallons of DI water in total to the 10 batteries. There was also some corrosion mostly on the positive terminals. I scraped it off but bringing some terminal cleaner and sealer is a good idea. I also added a little water to the OSU-SP2 battery and the Tower fence battery. I left at about 15:30 PDT |
