Summary: Soil iron sampling
We arrived at noon to begin Fe sampling. The plan was to sample 3 transects, 5 locations/transects, two depths (surface much, 15cm hard sediment), with each transect heading different directions from the tower to cover the footprint. Here, transects were easier to maintain, but we followed existing paths rather than straight lines to not damage the footprint. Each point on the transect was ~5m apart. Depths were more straightforward here compared to West Pond. Here, the wetland is standing water for about 1 foot at which point you reach a loose mucky layer ~5-10cm depth containing roots, detritus, and newly accumulated soil. At the base of this layer is hardpack perfectly flat soil, clearly the previous corn field base. We sampled the top muck layer by hand, and used a soil core to remove hardpack soil directly below to 15cm depth. All soils were bagged in the field, and immediately extracted on shore in (1) HCl solution to measure Fe(III) and Fe(II) and (2) citrate ascorbate to measure poorly crystalline iron. When we pulled out the cores in almost all locations you could see clear iron oxide plaques. Similar to those seen at Twitchell alfalfa |
