Summary: Cleaned up T2 install, upgraded PT CR1000 met OS to fix phenocam image problem, collected data from T3.

East End
2017-06-27

I arrived about 10am. It was clear, sunny and warm with a nice breeze from the west. I stopped and chatted with the farmer (Jaime I think) mostly about the philosophy of life.

Temporary Tower #2 Closed Canopy
I pushed a couple of cinder blocks under the feet farthest from the shore and releveled the scaffolding. I remounted the radiation boom so the sensors are more to the south, a little higher, a little further out and over more vegetation. I also remounted the HMP45 so that it is plumb and upwind of its post and powered up its ventilation fan. I updated the settings on the Licor 7550 box – no channels from the 7700 were being recorded. I also changed the name of the unit from MB to EET2 and restarted it.

I looked at the met data. One of the soil heat flux plates is producing bad numbers. Maybe we can swap it next time. The PAR sensor also looks odd. Its reading was small and negative but seemed to have a reasonable diurnal pattern. I swapped its wires to make it positive but it might need swapping too.

I cut the excess chain off the solar panels for use at T3 and generally straightened things up.

Permanent Tower
I arrived about 1pm. Sam and Tyler were tromping around the footprint taking soil cores for iron analyses. Heather and Summer were there processing the samples as the came out of the ground.

I worked on the CR1000 that was not collecting images last time. I was using the other laptop last time and might not have configured the connections properly. This time I was using the usual laptop and after some fussing got the Ethernet connection to the CR1000 to work and got images sent from the camera. However, I went ahead and upgraded its operating system from v24 to v31. V31 is a major upgrade that resets and erases everything so I collected data beforehand. V31 also had some improvements to the FTP server. Getting the update to transfer to the CR1000 took some doing. It crashed four or five times before I got it to complete. If we do more updates in the field I think we need a laptop with a more stable serial port. At any rate it completed and I setup the data logger again. When I left all looked well.

I had Tyler move the Eosense CO2 that was in the air a little lower so that it was just in the water.

Temporary Tower #3 Boardwalk
I arrived about 2:30. The otters left some fresh presents.

I collected data from the met and flux systems for a quick look before next visit. I also collected data from the Hobo salinity probe and “relaunched” it to clear its memory. I’m not sure it was logging before because its memory was full. I also collected the data from the miniDot.

I left an aluminum post and a 2x4 to upgrade the radiometer mounts in the future.

T1 Open Water
I arrived about 3pm. The footprint of the tower in it current position is not so good. I explored two paths through the cattails to the open water and decided both are too long and difficult. It will be better to enter the open water by the short path to the met location walk along the edge on the water and cattails to a spot to the east of the met system. We will have to move the solar system out there on scaffolding and put the eddy on the tripod a short distance away. I left some scaffolding near the path to the met system.

At the eddy tower I noticed the bird spikes on the sonic had been pushed down almost into the path of the transducers. The spikes had been put on wrong making them loose. I cut them off and reaffixed them.
