Bouldin Corn

Carlos and I arrived at 12:40 PDT. It was warm and very windy with high thin clouds. We are calibrating 7700s today, so of course it was windy today.

The corn is about shin height. Carlos took veg height and measured row spacing and distance between plants.

Row spacing (cm)
77, 78, 72, 83, 75
Average=77, Std dev=4.1

Distance between plants (cm)
Transect 1
12.5, 11, 18, 13, 18
Transect 2
19, 6, 13, 16, 8
Transect 3
21.5, 11, 13, 15, 23
Transect 4
11, 12, 14, 19, 13
Transect 5
19.5, 10, 20, 10, 17
Average=14.54, Std dev=4.4

I downloaded met and USB GHG data. There was a USB error after pushing the eject button, but the GHG files seem complete with no “.part” files. All seems fine after restarting the 7550. I changed the eddy clock +35sec from 12:28:00 to 12:28:35. I restarted logging.

I downloaded the PA data and cycled its power. I downloaded the IRT data by swapping the microSD card and using CardConvert to convert the fast data to TOB1 and the slow data to TOA5. There was IRT data since 2022-05-11 because we forgot to download it last time.

The reservoir was 10% empty; we topped it off.

We calibrated LI-7700 sn TG1-0357. The calibration looked good and optics RH=16% so I did not swap the desiccant.

There were no camera photos to download today because during the last site visit we removed the NL115 to test in the lab. The NL115 and two CF cards all tested fine on the CR1000 in the lab last night. Today I brought two NL115 to try at BC. Both card readers and cards mounted ok. One card had some files with scrambled file names, so I reformatted it via FileControl. However, when I plugged the ethernet cable into the NL115, no lights were coming on and the camera was not able to talk to the NL115. Same thing for the spare NL115. I brought both interfaces back to the lab to test some more.

I downloaded zcam2 (camera in between rows). Photos seem fine although there was a little condensation inside the enclosure. I wiped the condensation off and added 3 medium desiccant packs. I need to prep more desiccant packs for next time. The camera’s clock is a few minutes fast but it’s not a big deal for these photos. Zcam1 sn RPI0W-001 (camera in-line with row) was dead. There was a puddle of water in the bottom of the enclosure and white corrosion all over the board and mini-USB connector. I removed zcam1 and its power cable to bring back to the lab.

I was having trouble connecting to the FD chamber, even though we could hear the pump working just like at last site visit. I tried both USB cables and both USB ports. I decided to bring the FD chamber sn FD20180067 back to the lab to test. I unplugged power from the cable and coiled the cabled up on the tower.

Carlos used a post pounder to pound the fence posts in more securely. He reattached the turnbuckles.

The 7500 read: 413ppm CO2, 701mmol/m3 H2O, 29.1C, 101.1kPa, 106SS – 108 after cleaning (reset to 100—last reset on 2022-05-22 so it’s weird SS has climbed so high again)
The 7700 read: 1.8ppm CH4 --> 1.9 after calibration, 40.RSSI – 77after cleaning – 75 after calibration

We left at 14:10 PDT.

Back in the lab, I tested the NL115s again using the lab CR1000 and spare phenocam. The NL115 ethernet ports did not work when first plugged into the powered CR1000, but they worked after power cycling the CR1000….duh. I’ll be back in the field tomorrow and can put the NL115 back on BC.
