Summary: Checked Zcam-2 clock battery, moved IRT radio antenna, Phenocam clock reset to 2000, power out a soil CO2 - fixed, 102 dendrometer repaired
Tonzi 2020-07-28 Kyoko, Hisashi and I arrived at about 11:00. Siyan and Sunny arrived about an hour later. It was hot, dry and sunny. The pond still has some water but is very low. The trees seem to have smaller leaves this year. We checked the z-cams. Last time z-cam 2 had a bad clock even though I had just swapped its clock battery. I tested its battery with the voltmeter load tester and is was below 3V and falling. But even the new batteries I had were similar – I think the load tested is just too strong for these tiny batteries. I put in a CR1225 instead of the recommended CR1220 hoping that a tighter fit might solve the problem. This seemed to do the job. However when I checked the new images they were all time tagged correctly. So maybe I fixed a non-problem. The tower computer seemed okay. There was some data from the IRT CR1000 but it was not recent. I used the SMA cable removed from Vaira to move the radio antenna at the IRT CR1000 away from the metal box and facing the tower better. This seemed to do the trick and the IRT data updated itself on the Tower computer. I was planning to give the Ethernet switch its own dedicated power supply instead of using the CR1000 5V port but there weren’t any free power ports and everything seemed to be working so this can wait until later. The Tower 7500 read: 400.3ppm CO2, 600.8mmol/m3 H2O, 98.6kPa, 31.0C, 98.3SS The Floor 7500 read: 414.4ppm CO2, 532.9mmol/m3 H2O, 98.7kPa, 30.7C, 99.2SS Looking at the images in the lab I discovered that the Phenocam’s clock got reset to 2000. I need to get in the habit of checking the Phenocam clocks each time we visit. Also I need to upgrade the power connections in the box at the tower top and keep the Phenocam powered, but I can’t turn off the network switch at night because the FLIR is using it. I guess we will just have to deal with some dark Phenocam images in the winter. Power was out at soil CO2. Some animal had chewed the negative lead on the batteries completely through. The insulation on the Vaisala tubes in the Open location had also been shredded. I fixed the break and everything seemed to power up correctly. This is another system that needs an overhaul. I collected the FD data but did not clear it. Seems we only lost a couple days of data due to the power outage. We also wrapped some mirrored Mylar around the FD chamber in the Open location to see if that decreases its temperature in the sun. I replaced the dendrometer gage on Tree 102. I found the large scale on the ground from the old one. I collected the Road Well data. The Li-ion battery pack was down to two of four status LEDs and the voltage was 10V as reported by the logger. Maybe time to swap it. We left at about 13:30 while Siyan was still doing midday water potential. |
