Summary: Took 3 soil cores along the EC footprint
2019-08-16 West Pond Robert and I arrived at 6.30 am at West Pond.It was a sunny and very warm day with no clouds. This was a visit to try the coring technique with the homemade piston corer I had used previously. When we arrived there was no water flowing from the inlet. We used the boardwalk located to the right of the EC tower to reach our coring spots. These were selected to follow a transect across the EC footprint. We took the first 2 cores at about 20 and 40 m from the tower, the length of the peat retrieved was 80 and 40 cm, respectively. The third core was taken at about 80 m from the tower and we used the boardwalk on the left to reach the site. The last core was about 1 m depth. The differences in peat retrieved lengths could be related to compaction during coring, as the bottom edges of the tube were not sharp enough to cut through the rhizomes and embedded dead biomass. We need to improve the method for next time. There wasn't standing water at any of the coring sites but the inlet had been turned on by someone else by the time we left. We left at 12 pm. |
