I arrive at 9:30am with Daphne. Baptiste, Patrick and Ian from LBL were waiting for us at the gate. The LBL crew will be making ground measurements to compliment flights by Mirage Systems. It was sunny and mild with some high thin clouds and a ring around the sun. The ground surface it dry and crumbly. The grass is still pretty green and there is more rain coming in the next week starting tomorrow.

The LBL crew surveyed the area roughly covered by SMAP soil moisture locations. They walked an EMI device around, took a bunch of GPS points, took some soil samples and flew a quadcopter with RGB camera for micro topography. There were at least three flights by Mirage Systems. There aircraft carried a Ground Penetrating Synthetic Aperture Radar (GPSAR). Operating from 300-3000 MHz, its Ultra Wide Band (UWB) capability provides both the penetration to image buried targets and the resolution to image surface features. All this work is related to the ECOSTRESS project.

Daphne and I tried to do all the regular fieldwork.

Tower 7500: 10:05, CO2 416.7, H2O 521, T 15.9, P 99.2, SS 101-103

I swapped out the keyboard on the LattePanda â€“ the mouse buttons on the old one often did not work. The micro SD card also seem to be having problems sporadically mounting and unmounting. I removed the card and changed the FLIR batch script to not move/rename the images. Next time Iâ€™ll try adding a USB drive for storage. I installed the Licor software v8.5.0 on the LattePanda â€“ now you can see the 7500 status from the bottom of the tower.

Daphne collected the data, serviced the z-cams, and measured the well depths. I did the soil moisture measurements. The probe near the Floor solar panels has broken pins and should be removed. The lower two locations of the â€˜Betweenâ€™ probe read bad â€“ maybe the next probe to die. I read the dendrometers. I reset the bands on trees 102 and 72. At tree 102 the small gauge fell off the dendrometer. It needs to be reattach flush with left end of slider.

The road well clock was 10min ahead â€“ reset to 11:07.

A wire was broken on the Tower fence. I forgot to repair it and did not turn on the fence charger.

We tried to do midday water potential. We got relatively consistent readings but had questions on protocol. Our numbers might have been a little high.

We went to Vaira at about1:45 while the LBL crew finished up. We returned at about 4pm and soon after we all left with the LBL crew stopping at Vaira to do a quick survey there.
