Summary: Initial collection of litterbags, fixed 7700 wash pump controls, got truck stuck in a mudpit

East End

Alex, Karen, and I arrived at 11:20. It was a beautiful, sunny, clear day with great visibility and a cold breeze. The water level was 42 cm. I put in a long, threaded bolt in the upper boardwalk to further secure the long-edge metal border; the old bolts had rusted and couldn’t be removed. Karen traced screen of the precipitation bucket so we can cut replacements for other sites.

Alex and Karen collected an initial batch of litter bags. Poles A-E were removed and bagged. The litter was black and pole A bags were covered by a good layer of decomposing litter. All the identification tags and markings were clearly visible (some bleaching of the orange tape).

I worked on fixing the 7700 wash reservoir pump. On the previous visit, I wasn’t able to manually control the mirror spin and the pump as expected, and we suspected a short somewhere. I inspected the wiring inside the reservoir enclosure and the wash power cable, but didn’t see anything wrong. I changed the 7700 from default to advanced cleaning, which seemed to resolve the issue of manually controlling the mirror spin and pump. I’m not sure what the default cleaning settings would be, but maybe something in those settings was confusing the manual controls.

I changed the 7500 and 7700 time from 12:44 to 12:35 to match the laptop time. I reset the box and confirmed that the USB was logging, the 7700 was connected, and the GHG columns look good. Alex replaced one of the sonic spikes that was missing.

LI7700 readings:
CH4 2.0ppm after cleaning
RSSI 82 after cleaning

We left at 12:50. On our way out, our 4x4 rental truck got stuck in the dirt road south of the old Twitchell Alfalfa field—a ditch on one side and a sheep fence on the other side. Some parts of the mud pit were 30+ cm deep. We were able to self-recover after 3min of pushing, rocking, and using a shovel to smooth down the mud around the tires. Next time, we should avoid this road and exit along the gravel road (go south from EE). Bryan also wants us to avoid the dirt road between the EE gravel road and EP.
