I arrived at about 10:00 with Siyan and Remi from LBNL. Gerardo and Lin from JPL had arrived shortly before and their safety guy arrive a little later. It was mild with high thin clouds and a gusty wind from the west blowing leaves off the trees.

JPL used a hand saw to cut a section from the felled dead tree between the tower and their solar panels and started to dig a trench to burry 8ga cable in plastic conduit. They planned to put their batteries on the concrete pad under the tower and run wire to their box at the level of the first solar panels. They will be at Tonzi through Tuesday 10/30 at least.

I collected data from the Tower. The FLIR system seems to have run fully for the last two weeks. I restarted the computer.

I re/tested the tipping buckets.
OSU SP1 got 97/100 tips. I gave it 0.5 turns CW â€“ this one should be good.

OSU SP3 was tested for the first time and got 89/100 tips â€“ I gave it 2.0 turns CW, retest
At OSU SP2 the cable was blocking the tipper inside which might account for the high reading last time â€“ not letting the tipper rise to its full height. This time the tipper was stuck on the cable in the up position. I lost a few tips of water before discovering this. After discovering this I got 73 tips plus what was spilled. I ended up undoing the 4 CW turns from last week with 4 CCW turns. I should retest this one.

The Floor had no power. The panels were supplying 10A but the battery bank was just above 10V. One battery in the southeast corner of the bank was buzzing. After isolating all the batteries, they all remained just about 10V except for the bad one. After reconnecting the good ones the bank slowly rose to above 12V. These are all old batteries and permanent damage may have been done. Iâ€™ll try to check on them next week.

The soil co2 system also had no power. There it looked like a cow had leaned on the wires coming out of the box under the trees and pulled the battery and solar wires loose from the solar controller. I put the loose wires back but the wiring at this location is very confusing and Iâ€™m not sure everything was reconnected correctly. The tree CO2 probes seemed to be on and the 23x had power, but the CO2 probes there and at the bid tree were off â€“ not surprising in itself as their power is cycled but different from the probes under the trees. Iâ€™ll need to check this again too.

The CO2 from the Floor seems low - maybe just dirty.

Remi did a survey of the SMAP remote nodes. Some seem completely destroyed.
