Summary: Troubleshoot soil moisture, computer locked up previous day, removed plugged up external 2um filter on LGR.

Sherman Island 2009-02-12

Arrived about 10:20 and worked on Ben’s sensors first. Low overcast, dark cold, no wind. By the time I left it was warmer and the overcast was breaking up, still not much wind. Green grass covers about 80-90% of the ground. Cow feed spread out, very wet and muddy, lots of cows. Green leaves at base of pepper weed about 5cm.

Ben’s three remaining Decagon probes seem not to be working. Installed new program and wiring, one probe that tested good in the lab work but other three not. Tested each individually with negative results. Installed good probe at –2.5cm and it seemed to report correctly. Previously broken probes on their way to Decagon for replacement and I have requested to know how they originals broke. Maybe some insight there. For now only the one probe at –2.5cm seems good.

Computer had locked up the previous morning 042 at 04:35:30. Screen frozen –reset.

LI7500 initially wet but soon dried out.

LGR reporting 1.95 ppm CH4, 20.36C, 15.274us and 107 Torr. I checked the filters, 40um seemed okay, 2um outside seems almost completely plugged. I removed the 2um and returned the system to 10Hz operation without it. Pressure was 139.4 Torr. I have two brand new 2um filters to go next trip anyone makes a trip.

Verizon modem seems broken – will not power up. I brought it back to test in lab.

CNR1 Outgoing shortwave seems bad from Ameriflux report and from calibration test I did. I checked wiring and found no problems. Probably need to swap out CNR1 next time.

I installed a USB extension cable to the left side of the 19” rack to make it easier to plug in external drives for data transfer. Not removing the Verizon modem to copy data might improve its function.
