Summary: Swapped LI7500, added UPS for computer, added cal panel for web cam, removed calibration CNR1, soil moisture system brought to lab for troubleshooting.

Sherman Island 2009-01-29

Ben and I arrived about 9:30 AM. Eddy system was all running. Weather was clear, sunny, cool, very light breeze in contrast to relatively strong winds in Berkeley. The pepper weed is all but gone due to winter and cows in the field. Short green grass covers maybe 70% of the field near the tower, increasing coverage. Also some hay for cows spread out. Water in ditch near parking has dropped a lot (maybe 500 cm). Large puddles at the gate and ground seems wet.

Electric fence was off on arrival. On departure it was initially shorting out but I fixed the short and left it on.

Winflux was reading:
W = 0.110 Ts = 13.9
U = -1.79 H2O = 1.079
V = -0.55 CO2 = 1.86
Dir = 170 CH4 = 2.673

LGR readings:
CH4 ppm = 3.1 on arrival later 2.5
Cell Pressure = 136.7 Torr
Mirror time = 15.4
Sample rate = 10Hz
Pump hours = 5300.5
Air conditioning = On
Water traps = some condensation in both, about 2” in second one – did not drain

Datalogger:
HMP45 fan – okay
Radiometers – okay
Rain bucket – okay

Swapped LI7500
Removed sn 0035
Installed sn 0042

Other notes:

Tried to get Verizon link flixed. Verizon insisted on using COM5 which was already taken by CR1000. I unplugged CR1000 USB to serial adapter, let Verizon take COM5 then plugged in CR1000 and it got COM6. I adjusted Loggernet to look for CR1000 on COM6 and connected successfully. Verizon was still very stubborn in making a connection but seemed to be connecting correctly when I left. Morning of the 30th, no contact with Sherman through Verizon link.

I installed a UPS battery backup for the computer. It uses a 7Ahr battery – maybe have three hours of backup power.

I added a gray panel for the web cam in the lower left corner.

Removed calibration CNR1 and CR10x datalogger. Working on a write up of the calibration.

Ben’s soil moisture having strange problems. Not running on arrival, starts running only after connecting to CR10X with computer. Tried swaping data loggers and running with Decagon provided Campbell code directly from CR10x with no solution in the field. Brought two back to the lab for testing. Will be testing the probes in situ one at a time and return to Decagon for repair.
