Summary: Installed renovated Annex tower in the marsh to the west southwest, leveled, tightened diffuse SW, tidied up cables, regular data collection, pulled weeds at solar panels.
Rush Ranch 2025-03-26 I arrived at about 9:00 PDT. I drove out to the site because I had a bunch of stuff to install. The roads were dry. A bunch of cows came over to lick the car while I was working. It was mostly cloudy and super windy but slowly clearing and diminishing. The grass is very green and the wetland is still mostly brown but with some green peeking through. I set up the annex tower today. I moved the tripod next to the main tower so that I could sit on the boardwalk to work on it. I added a horizontal pipe to the top of the tower and mounted the PAR_out, LW_out and SW_out at the end. I put the data logger box on the vertical just above the tripod legs. The system also include three sets of SHF, TDR and 5-point TC profile (-2, -4, -8, -16 and -32cm). There is also an HMP45 for AirT and RH but I forgot its solar shield so it is just stuffed under the data logger box for now. I mounted a 10W solar panel near the top opposite the boom. We will see if birds poop on it there. It charges a lithium power pack by way of a DC-DC buck converter. There is a pair of Campbell radios one in the annex data logger box and one in the tower logger box. The installed equipment is: Data logger CR1000 sn 45312 Multiplexer AM25T sn 6768 Radio Tower sn 21519, Annex sn 21520 T/RH HMP45 sn F1830005 SHF Hukseflux sn 003047 SHF Peltier sn pc3, sn pc4 TDR CS655 sn 67373, sn 67372 and CS616 sn ag-tdr01 SW_out CM11 sn 996985 PAR_out Licor sn Q40957 LW_out Apogee sn 1408 Once everything was mounted, I coiled up the ground sensors and cable tied them to the tripod. Then I was able to pick the whole thing up and carry it into the marsh. I found a patch to the west southwest that looked reasonable. I leveled the radiometers and staked down the tower. I installed the ground sensors poorly because I half expect Patty to possibly move the tower in the next couple weeks. Back at the main tower I was able to connect to the annex tower over the radio link. Seems like the soil maybe too salty for the TDR to work. One CS655 had an EC of 6 and infinite VWC, the other had an EC of 1.8 and a WVC of 76%. The CS616 was reading nan. I did the regular data collection, met, flux and camera – all seemed well. While I was there the 7700 did an auto wash – its RSSI was just below 30. When I went to clean it, the bottom mirror looked pretty clean. Cleaning just the upper mirror brought the RSSI up to about 65. The 7500 read: The 7700 read: I topped off the wash reservoir, it was only a little low. The diffuse SW sensor was tilted slightly to the east because the nuts were only finger tight. I leveled it and use a wrench on the nuts. I tidied up a bunch of the cables that were blowing in the wind. Weeds were covering the bottom of the solar panels. I thought about remounting the panels higher but that will take more time so I settle for just pulling out the weeds. I left at about 11:20 PDT |
