Vaira: 2005-02-17 09:00:00 (DOY 48)
Author: Ted Hehn
Others:

JD-48-50

Weather Clear and sunny at 09:00 turning to fog by 09:15 All vegetation covered with heavy dew and ground is wet with standing water. Grass about 2” tall with clump grasses 6”tall. I have not seen the ground cover this full at Vaira since I arrived in 2001. Mr. Tonzi noted that the Canadian Thistle was growing and that is unusual.

Trip Purpose Massive met data loss at Vaira
Vaira Ranch:
Thurs 09:00 CR23x3 is dead. The batter was one 4 Everlast that were purchased in April 2001 that was initially used at the Vaira system then removed and used for data logers.

Install new Excide NC27 and CR23x3 begins to operate.

09:08 CR23x3 digital readout batt volts = 11.4 + 0.4 = 11.8
At battery with DMM = 12.27 => 400mvolt drop on power leads

09:14 Flux platform in Low Voltage Drop Out mode. 3.7 solar amp, 12.3 volts. Does not return power until 12.5 volts achieved.

CR23X3 *B lithium batter volts = 13.4 – this is odd should be 2.4 – 3.4 volt call Campbell.

10:30 Remove sonic translator enclosure because fiberglass is deteriorated to the point where touching the thing leave your hand riddled with fiber glass slivers.

Install new enclosure & translator.

Digital multimeter will no longer fit in PC enclosure so I placed it in CR23x3 enclosure

Connect new sonic(SN23) and it would not function. I installed a new cable still does not function. Connect old sonic (SN28) with new cable and it did function. Connect new sonic(SN23), remove rs232 line between PC and sonic and the sonic begins to function. Typically this indicates a ground loop that possibly has high resistance

Sonic #28 functions with or without rs232 line and #23 only functions with rs232 removed. One of these is an oddball and this must be distinguished.

CR23x3 values: Air temp = 13, Soil Temp profile TC1 = 22.9 all others at 12-13
Cr23x batt volt = 12.7 + 0.4 = 13.1
11:29 Reset CR23X3 table 1 from 10 sec to 60 sec exec interval to perform 10 tip check on precip gage and discovered that the precip multiplier was still set to 25.4 . I thought I had changed this on 8Feb05 but did not.
See the following:
Teds_site_Log_8Feb05.doc
Teds_site_Log_8Feb05_Addendum_17FEB05.doc

A 1 tip check yielded 25.4
The 10 tip check yielded a value 254.00
Change precip mult from 25.4 to 0.254 and perform 10 tip check which yielded a value of 2.54.

Change precip mult from 25.4 to 0.254 and 10 tip check yields 2.54

12:21 Reconfigure NDVI and brace all leads with wire ties to eliminate the strain they are applying that pulls the unit out of level. Also use electrical tape to assist in keeping it level. Using tape for such purposes is disgusting but I will allow it for a short term.

NDVI 14, 15, 16, 17 on MUX

Discovered broken wire on MUX for the pressure sensor CH 7 lo P = 100.23.

Repair pressure lead and value changes from 99.26. Disconnect lead connector on sensor and value falls to 75

Friday 10:31
Flux system in LVD status
CR23x3 operational batt = 11.3 + .4 = 11.7 OK

10:37
Batt v = 11.7
Solar amps = 2.3
Load amps 3.0 screen on and winflux running
Load amps 2.2 screen off and winflux running this is lower that what the laptops were drawing by about 0.5 amp ---yahoooooooooooooo

15:45 All appears well

Batt V = 12.3
Solar amps = 4.4
Load amp 2.3

Saturday
08:39 Arrive Cr23x3 is functional. Flux platform is in LVDO mode.
