Hill Slough
2021-02-26

Daphne, Ariane and I arrived at about 14:40. It was clear, sunny and mild with a light breeze from the WSW. The marsh is completely brown and the ground feels slightly spongy but dry and easy to drive on.

In the past week the contractors have put in the wooden boardwalk and platforms for the tower and solar panels and the 6ft chain link fencing with razor wire on top. The quality of the construction looks top notch. However, a collision of design ideas has led to a major security flaw. I had designed the platforms for the towers to be little more than posts to hold the feet of the scaffolding with openings to the ground in the middle to reduce the shading of the marsh and reflected light to the outgoing radiation sensors. At this point the security fencing was supposed to be on the ground spaced a little way from the platforms. Then we decided to make the platforms a little larger and put the fencing on the platform to keep it out of the water too. Now we have these beautiful, securely fenced platforms with huge gaping holes in the floor that anyone can climb through.

I ended up moving one of the platform planks to divide the hole in half and provide a spot for one corner of the scaffolding feet. Then the plan is to bolt some more chain link fencing over the holes. We set up both the tower and solar power scaffolding. We attached the radiation boom to the short side of the scaffolding but it is pointed to the west and we need a two foot extension to attach it to the long side and get it pointed south. We also mounted the eddy post to the northwest corner.

Unfortunately, while we were trying the figure out what to do about the holes in the platforms the wind blew over the solar panels and one panel was broken. We mounter all the panels sn 11ZV0M0855, sn 11ZV0M0836 and sn 11ZV0M0829 with security bolts but the lowest one will have to be replaced. The scaffolding and the solar panels are too big to be removed through the holes in the platforms. However we did brought the batteries back to the lab since we did not have a good way to secure them without a battery box.

We left at about 17:30
