Summary: Tower solar controller melted terminal - fix but swapped for soil co2 system. New ventilated HMP45 shield, change solar panel angle, leveled net radiometers.
| When: Wed., 29Jan03, JD-29 Where: Tonzi/Vaira Ranches Who: Ted Hehn/Liukang Xu/Jianwu Tang Weather Trip Purpose: General site maintenance Tonzi Ranch: 29jan03 Tonzi-tower power failure -terminal in solar regulator overheated, melted solder and broke free from motherboard. Remove regulator from soil IRGA system and install on tower. Repair regulator that failed by soldering terminal back in place. Install repaired regulator in soil IRGA system. The regulator that failed has a large hole burned in the case around the positive battery lead input. This regulator is fine for small load current applications (soil IRGAs) and should not be used on the flux systems where there is 30 amp capability. Install newly designed radiation shield on tower - this design incorporates a small fan attached directly to a Campbell radiation shield-this design allows the sunlight to directly impinge upon the black fan body which may cause heating -- future designs should have the fan painted white and a hole in one of the shield plates such that the fan is also shielded from incoming radiation Change PVM angle from 45 to 60 degrees to align perpendicular to winter solar angle of 30 degrees. Level net radiometers at tower floor met system Misc Notes The regulators at all sites need to be fused on all inputs and outputs. 30 amp on solar inputs, 30 amp on battery I/O and 5 amp on the load outputs. |
